Mini Crown
This series is inspired by the crown of thorns placed on the head of Jesus Christ on the day he was crucified. Across all twelve pieces, a continuous scripture passage moves from John 19:1 through John 20:18. The story begins at the trial and ends at the resurrection. Each crown holds a moment in that passage, and each of the twelve diptychs is a completely original work of art, made entirely by hand over the course of a year.
There are twelve diptychs in this collection. Your piece will be dispatched based on the order in which your purchase is received.
What you are collecting
Two original panels, designed to be hung side by side. The first panel holds the crown. Sculptural and dimensional, it rises physically off the surface. The black background is covered in handwritten scripture, every word placed by hand. At the centre is a reflective surface. When you look into it, you see yourself inside the story.
The second panel carries an original illustration of the most defining moment in the scripture that crown holds. Both panels are framed in deep crimson, a colour chosen deliberately. It does not let you forget what this story cost.
Hung side by side, the two panels open the fullness of that moment in scripture. Together they show you what happened and what it meant.
A crown of thorns was pressed into his head. The story did not end in the grave.
The reflective surface at the centre of every crown is intentional. When you stand before it, you see yourself looking back. You are not a spectator of what happened. You are why it did.
A note from Bernice
I do not know why God put this project in my heart. But I am honoured to have been given it and glad I followed it through.
After a year of working on this, I hope it goes to the twelve people it belongs to.
He wore the crown so we could wear grace.
