ARTIST BIO
Bernice Udeogu is a self-taught Nigerian-Canadian contemporary artist based in London, Ontario, working at the intersection of painting and sculpture.
Bernice came to art the long way around. She studied journalism, worked as an on-air personality, and built a life that made sense on paper. But she kept finding herself drawn back to making things with her hands, to giving form to what she felt, to the kind of work that couldn't be done with words alone. She eventually followed that pull into the studio.
Working with clay, plaster, resin, and acrylics, she builds paintings that are also sculptures, layering texture and three-dimensional form onto the canvas until the work has a physical presence you can feel before you fully understand it.
Her practice is rooted in her Nigerian heritage, her faith, and her life in Canada, drawing from both worlds to explore identity, womanhood, and the spiritual complexity of being fully human.
Bernice's works are held in private collections across Canada, the United States, and Europe. She works out of her studio in London, Ontario.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I create from the inside out. Everything I make begins with something I feel so deeply that the only way to release it is to put it on the canvas and give it to someone else to feel too.
I am a mixed media visual artist. My work lives at the intersection of the spiritual and the human, exploring what it means to carry something deep inside you that the world doesn't always have eyes to see.
My subjects are often turned inward, not performing for the world or explaining themselves to it, just existing fully in their own awareness, communing with something deeper than what the eye can see. I paint them this way because I believe stillness is not weakness. I believe the interior life is sacred. And I believe the subjects I paint deserve to be seen in their wholeness, not just their strength.
I don't create to be seen. I create because something inside me needs to come out, and once it's out, it belongs to whoever needs it most.
I believe God places gifts inside people the same way He places life inside seeds, not because the conditions are perfect, but because He knows the heart of the one carrying them. My art is an act of faith in that belief.
I have come to understand that love is the most costly thing a person can offer this world. To create with your whole self. To be vulnerable enough to put something true on a canvas and let strangers feel it. To keep showing up even when you are unsure, even when you are afraid, even when the world has not yet caught up to what you are making. That is what I am committed to now, not creating from a safe distance, but pouring completely, the way every artist I have ever been moved by has poured.
This work is for the person who has been deeply misunderstood. For the one who carries more than the world can see. For anyone who has ever felt like their gift was too much or not enough. I make art so that people feel less alone in what they carry. And I make it so that I remember, again and again, why I am here.
